Maia, the Meaning Behind the Name
Maia is a very beautiful and symbolic name.
It has a number of meanings, all of which relate to what we do at Maia Skin Care and our philosophy in some way, most notably Maia the earth goddess of Spring, and Maia the 'maker', demonstrating the power of creativity and transformation.
Maya or Maia originates from the root 'ma' along with other words such as mama, making, magic, majesty, moon, month and mind are derived.
Maia is the ancient Roman goddess of Spring, growth, especially of plants, flowers and growing things, love, life and fertility, literally 'she who brings increase', related to the word 'magnus' meaning 'great'.
In Greek mythology, Maia is also a Goddess, the eldest of the Pleiades, the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. She and her sisters were pursued by Orion, and turned into doves to preserve their safety.
She is also the mother of the God Hermes, a healer and the messenger of the Gods.
The month of May was named after Maia. May Day, the first day of May is a celebration of the Spring Goddess and annual rebirth and creation.
Maia is the name of a star in the star cluster Pleiades which can be seen high in the sky in autumn and winter in the Northern hemisphere.
Interestingly the star is mentioned in the children's book Mary Poppins published in 1934. Maia visits England to do some Christmas shopping for the other stars in the constellation!
Maia (or Maya) is also the mother of Buddha and symbolises the Great Universal Mother.
Lastly Maia is the name given to Hans Christian Anderson's Thumbelina by the flower spirits (or her husband, depending on the version you read!) at the end of the story for her beauty and kind nature.
