Natural means Natural, right?

June 17th, 2008 by Sharon

Natural Skincare means 100% natural

I suppose that would depend on your interpretation of the word ‘natural’. It has become a bit (a lot!) of a buzzword recently along with ‘organic’ and ‘eco’ in relation to skincare and beauty. All the major cosmetics companies have been eager to launch their natural, organic, green and eco ranges.

But just how green and natural are they?

Currently there is no legal definitions for the words ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ when applied to cosmetics. This means that companies often use the words but sadly don’t use the goods, so you do not get any benefits from pure natural botanical ingredients.

To tell how natural a product is you need to turn it over or upside down and read the label. Well actually, study the label with a mangifying glass.

You are looking for  botanical sounding names, in latin, such as: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil , Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter and so on. (By the way, that means jojoba oil, lavender oil and shea but butter.) The closer to the top of the ingredients list, the higher percentage of the ingredient present.

It’s all fine and dandy for the front of the bottle to say ‘with extracts of mango and jojoba’ but I can bet you will find the corresponding botanical names in amongst the parabens (oh, yes, but that is another post for another day!) like this: Simmondsia Chinensis, methylparaben, mangifera indica, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben.

So how much jojoba and mango is acutally in a product like that then? My guess would be less than 1%, and hardly what I would call natural!

When we say natural, we mean it.  100% ALL NATURAL.

Great blog! I totally agree with you. With all the “buzz” words going around it’s getting hard for the consumer to know what they are really getting. I’m Cinnamon Henke, owner of AlmostNaturalBeauty.com (a beauty blog) and I noticed a lack of networks just for us “Green/ Natural/ or Organic” beauty blogers. So I created The Green Beauty Bloggers Network. It’s a place for us Green / Natural / Organic / Eco beauty bloggers to unite and network with each other. It’s still being worked on but I’d love for you to join and help spread the word. I believe having a network just for our types of blogs will benefit us greatly.
