If you have sensitive skin prone to irritation, redness, stinging and even rashes, you will know how upsetting and frustrating it is caring for your skin.
Sensitive skins may react to the many chemicals such as synthetic fragrances and parabens found in commercial skincare, even skin care specifically for sensitive skin.
Many people with sensitive skins turn to natural skin care to gently soothe, nourish and protect their skin, such as skin care free from parabens, harsh chemicals and skin irritants with natural active ingredients.
In fairness it does need to be said that some natural and organic skin care may also pose a problem for sensitive skin. This may be if someone has a known allergy to a certain raw ingredient or even if certain essential oils are used, or used at a high percentage.
Just because something is natural it doesn’t mean it is necessarily good for you or your skin (stinging nettles anyone?).
Tips on how to care for sensitive skin:
- Minimise the amount of products you use to avoid overloading your skin. Muli-purpose products are ideal for sensitive skin such as Maia’s Goddess Treatment Balm.
- Drink plenty of water all throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated. It might seem boring but it really does make a huge difference!
- If unsure of any particular problem ingredients choose products that have as fewer ingredients as possible to minimise the chance of a reaction. The Omni Balm contains calendula and chamomile to soothe and heal, and has the least amount of ingrededients suitable for sensitive skin and even babies.
- Avoid exfoliating products. Use a soft organic muslin cloth with a mild cleanser but don’t rub the skin, use a gentle pressing movement instead.
- Pamper yourself! De-stress daily with a warm bath, good book or a sport or hobby that you enjoy. Give yourself some time each day to daydream, imagine and relax.
- Give yourself a steam facial once a week. Put your head over a bowl of steaming hot water for two minutes to gently open your pores. Splash will cool water or toner and nourish with a skin-boosting serum. For a spa steam facial at home add a sprig of rosemary, lavender or rose petals or essential oils and let nature do the work!
Botanicals for sensitive skin
There are a number of herbs, flowers, oils and extracts that are known to be soothing, calming and anti-inflammatory when applied to the skin.
If you have sensitive skin look for products with high proportions of chamomile, calendula, evening primrose, starflower or borage oil, sunflower and apricot oils, rose and jojoba.
You will find all the beauty products and remedies at Maia Skin Care nourishing, calming and comforting for sensitive skins.
